Charivari: A loud, discordant mock serenade or uproar used to express public disapproval
The Charivari Institute is an independent centre of alternative and community education that specialises in the humanities and social sciences. We offer short courses and one-off events where academics and other experts speak about their intellectual passions and encourage people to think critically about the big questions of culture and society.
Ironically, at a time when such thinking is most needed, it has become scarcer in universities around the world. Funding cuts have led to course closures and job losses in disciplines that have traditionally advocated for social justice, and challenged those in power. University managers have bowed to political pressures to turn higher education away from ethical critique and towards vocational training.
In a world where the shrill voices of social media influencers are starting to dominate public debates, the Charivari Institute provides an alternative space in which to conduct an informed conversation towards a better world. Join us.
